⭐ The 4 Pillars of Production
Footage Types (A-Roll & B-Roll)
Clearly separate your A-Roll (the primary narrative, main talking head footage, or core screen recording) from your B-Roll (supplementary visuals, extreme close-ups, environmental shots). Building a dynamic narrative requires switching between these layers constantly to reset the viewer's attention span.
The Rule of Scale (Editing Sequence)
Always follow the rule of scale: Make the big, structural cuts first. Carve out the story from start to finish before you ever touch a visual effect or transition. Once the foundation is rock solid, zoom in for the small, precise micro-cuts to remove dead space and perfect the pacing.
Audio Hierarchy & Polish
Audio is 50% of the video experience. Enhance the main dialogue for absolute clarity. Always introduce a subtle, low-volume background voice or instrumental track. This eliminates "dead silence" and subconsciously keeps the audience engaged, even during minor pauses in your speech.
Camera Presence & Eye Contact
Eye contact builds deep trust with the viewer. Always look directly at the lens when speaking. Do not look at your monitor, your script, or your own reflection on the screen. The lens represents the eyes of your audience. Speak directly to them.
🎛️ Reaper Complete Audio Mastering Setup
Raw audio is never ready for publishing. To achieve a rich, podcast-quality voiceover, you must process your audio through a specific plugin chain in Reaper. Apply these effects in this exact order to your vocal track.
Step 1 Noise Reduction (ReaFir)
The foundation of clean audio is silence. ReaFir removes constant background hums like computer fans or AC units.
- Mode: Set ReaFir to Subtract mode.
- Action: Check the "Automatically build noise profile" box while playing a section of absolute silence (room tone) for 3-5 seconds.
- Crucial: Uncheck the box immediately after building the profile so it doesn't subtract your actual voice.
Step 2 Noise Gate (ReaGate)
While ReaFir removes constant hums, a noise gate mutes the microphone completely when you aren't speaking, removing mouth clicks, breaths, and background bumps.
- Threshold: Set between -40dB and -30dB (adjust until background noise disappears, but your voice easily opens the gate).
- Attack: 1ms to 3ms (fast enough so the start of your words aren't cut off).
- Release: 150ms to 250ms (allows the natural decay of your last word to fade out smoothly without robotic chopping).
Step 3 Equalization (ReaEQ)
EQ shapes the tone of your voice, making it sound professional, crisp, and warm while removing muddy frequencies.
- Band 1 (High-Pass Filter): Set to High-Pass at 80Hz. This completely removes low-end rumble (like microphone stand bumps or traffic outside).
- Band 2 (Cut Mud): A slight dip (-2dB to -3dB) around 250Hz to 300Hz removes the "boxy" or "muddy" sound of an untreated room.
- Band 3 (Presence Boost): A gentle wide boost (+2dB to +4dB) around 3kHz to 5kHz. This adds clarity, making the words easy to understand.
- Band 4 (Air): A high-shelf boost (+1dB) at 10kHz for a slight airy, expensive microphone feel.
Step 4 Compression (ReaComp)
Compression evens out the volume. It makes your quiet whispers louder and your loud shouts quieter, creating a consistent, easy-to-listen-to track.
- Ratio: 3:1 or 4:1 (Standard for voiceover).
- Threshold: Lower the threshold until you see about -3dB to -6dB of gain reduction on the meter when you speak at normal volume.
- Attack: Fast (around 5ms) to catch sudden loud spikes.
- Release: Auto, or around 100ms.
- Make-up Gain: Increase this to compensate for the volume lost during compression. (Usually +3dB to +5dB).
Step 5 Limiter & Loudness Standard (ReaLimit)
The final safety net to ensure your audio never peaks and distorts, while meeting platform volume standards.
- Ceiling / Brickwall: Set to -1.0dB. Your audio will mathematically never exceed this volume, preventing distortion on phones and TVs.
- LUFS Target: Use a loudness meter (like Youlean Loudness Meter or Reaper's native stats) to adjust the final gain until your overall integrated loudness hits -14 LUFS. This is the golden standard for YouTube and streaming platforms.

The Big Cuts (Timeline Assembly)
Start by dropping all your raw A-Roll onto the timeline. Perform the "big cuts" first. Scrub through the footage and aggressively delete all the obvious mistakes, long pauses, throat clears, and bad takes. Do not worry about making it visually perfect yet; your only goal in phase one is to build the core structural story.
The Small Cuts & B-Roll Layering
Once the structure is solid, zoom in for the micro-cuts. Tighten up the pacing to maintain high energy, cutting out filler words like "ums" and "ahs". Then, layer your B-Roll (screen recordings, product shots) on the video track above your A-Roll.
